We really are in the wilds of South Korea and Internet access hasn't been readily available in most of the places we have stayed. We stopped by President Han's grocery store, where his wife gave us drinks and we took a photo. We would have loved to spend some time in there looking at all the groceries. We had a traditional breakfast of soup and sides including little tiny shrimp and anchovies. We found out the Imgye Rotarians had been delayed by car trouble so we did a little more sightseeing in Taebaek. We first stopped at a Memorial for men who had died in the coal mines and then drove high up a mountain to a windfarm. We had a wonderful view of the valley below. We are constantly amazed at where our hosts will drive this big van we are in. Most secondary roads are one lane and we had to pull over a number of times on the side of the mountain as we passed farmers and others picking herbs along the way. Soon we were meeting Director Koh and said goodbye to Mr. Ham. We had lunch near the soybean paste farm we had visited a week ago - I enjoyed the buckwheat pancakes and little rolled dumplings - I can hang on to them with chopsticks. Since he had to work Tuesday and Wednesda during the day, I'd wander around some of the historical sites, meet him for lunch, then wander around town a bit more. There's a cool old fortress there that's like 1600 years old, and nearby are some tombs from the royal families of that era. The tombs are interesting because they essentially look like grassy mounds, but have little doors on the front. They're surprisingly simple inside, considering the amount of power their residents wielded during their lives. There was also another museum nearby that talked more about the local history, going back about 2000 years or more. I think I did pretty well navigating around town without any maps, and with the street signs being only in Korean. A few times I got a little turned around but always got back on track pretty quickly. We ate lots of Korean food, and I was surprised to find that a lot of it is essentially Japanese food with Korean names. (But don't tell them that!) In the evenings, we hung out in front of "Buy the Way", a local convenience store with "the scooter club," a group of English teachers Mike is friends with. After talking to a few people we said that we´d cut out the North of Thailand and just fly into Laos and a wise choice it turned out to be. We flew into Luang Prabang and in the taxi from the airport to the guesthouse kids on every corner threw water over us. It turned out that we had arrived in Laos during the New Year celebrations, which is a country wide water fight and yes adults partake. Throwing basin after basin of water over complete strangers, who were either driving by on mopeds or in open cars, is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Being allowed to walk up to a tourist carrying their belongings and drowning them is a truely spiritual experience. The best part is tha´s it´s for good luck and no one gets angry at you Luang Prabang is an amazingly chilled out place. At night the main street shuts off traffic and turns into a street market. There´s street markets all over South East Asia but this is the only one we saw with a bit of class.You pick a fish to BBQ, gorge through a veg buffet and all for lass than 3 dollars. I created this video at www.youtube.com Cocktails were at 5, dinner at 6, and speeches at 7pm.. Cars trickled in after 5, 1 or 2 at a time, then just before 6 this group came.. and it was announced shortly after that Gov Walker and Bachmann decided not to come. this was the only entrance into the Golf course. I don't think there was over 20 cars that went to the golf course. Even after it was annouced that Gov Walker was a no show.. the crowed stayed at least 30 more minutes. When we arrived, the wind was blowing hard so Dean headed straight to the kiteboarding school "Jibes" to book some lessons. The wind during the following six days was very erratic and resulted in a total of only five and half hours of tuition. Still, it was enough for Dean to completely master kiteboarding and to even show the instructors a few tricks. These "tricks" involved face-planting, drinking vast quantities of sea water and kite-crashing, all of which were performed with great panache. Luckily, "Jibes" happened to have a pretty good restaurant and bar with decent music and comfy sofas, so when not kiteboarding we spent most of our time just hanging out there. In fact, apart from once or twice, we ate lunch and dinner there every day. After six frustrating days of waiting for the right wind conditions, we headed off up the coast to Nha Trang, a four hour bus journey away. We had read that Nha Trang is the best place in Vietnam for scuba diving and snorkeling, but when we arrived, we found it to be another noisy city with busy traffic, lots of high rise hotels and Western style resorts and a beach that was not particularly great, so we decided to leave after only one day. Verbalist's travel blog entry: "It was one of those cotton candy, kite flying, rock climbing & relaxing kind of days. The lemon-orange sun hung proudly in the bluest-tranquil sky, bathing all who ventured out in a bath of glowing light. It was a perfect as a day could be and I was fortunate enough to spend a few hours taking various surroundings around the city. I spent the day at Munhak Sports complex as well the the square near Incheon city hall. At the sports complex some children played, others enjoyed the inside of Incheon Munhak Stadium, while others still just enjoyed the rock-climbing wall as well as the surrounding gardens. The Munhak sports complex is made up two stadiums, the first being Incheon Munhak Stadium and the other Dream field. Both are awe inspiring, but the crown jewel is definitely Munhak Stadium, Home of Incheon United Football club. The inside of the stadium is beautiful and the pitch a dark well-manicured green. Unfortunately I was unable to get inside of the baseball field, but I am returning in the future to see a Korean baseball game and then I will post those photos. Nonetheless, I did get some great photos of the outside.
